and meadows of knee-high grass swaying in the breeze.

It was beautiful! Then came the real ascent, up some rocky trails that crossed over some glacial rock piles spilling down the canyon. We decided to stop when we got to a spring fed pipe that came out of the mountain and offered some very cold water safe enough to drink. Rolayne, of course, was able to climb the trail like a mountain goat. The box-shaped item just to the right of Rolayne in the picture below is the end of the trough that the water flows into.

I huffed and puffed and made frequent stops to catch my breath, but I persevered and met her at the water. Behind me is the canyon we came up.

I was glad I brought my camera, for on the way down, I was able to take some pictures of the beautiful leaves changing color.

Below are some flowers we found near where we turned around. I don't know what they are called, but they were pretty.

Here is a view of the canyon as we are heading down.

We were both a bit stiff from the hike, but that didn't stop us from going to Lowe's hardware store and picking up more white marble for Grandpa and Grandma's flower beds. We got 25 bags and with help from Mike, Dave and Grandpa, got the old beauty bark shoveled out and the bags spread out. It wasn't enough, however, so Mike, Dave and I hurried back down to Lowe's to get 25 more bags, and after hurrying we had to wait a half hour for a fork lift to come bring down another pallet of rock bags, since Rolayne and I had decimated the bags that were accessible.
But now the rockery is all done. We've given Grandpa gift cards to Lowe's for about the last 3 years for birthdays and Christmases so he could purchase all his white marble. What are we going to get him now?

Wow! That looks like quite a fun hike! Good job!
By the way, it looks like you can only publish comments on your blog if you have a Google account - did you intend it to be that way? I have gmail so I could but others may not. Just FYI.
